Choosing Your First Generative AI Use Cases
To get started with generative AI, first focus on areas that can improve human experiences with information.
Despite tensions surrounding GPU procurement, the partnership strengthens Nvidia’s position as an essential player in global AI, while Alibaba expands its offerings without duplicating effort.
Alibaba and Nvidia have agreed to integrate Nvidia's physical AI development tools into Alibaba Cloud.
The Chinese cloud vendor revealed on Wednesday that the partnership enables the development of AI for practical physical applications, such as humanoid robots, self-driving cars and connected smart spaces incl factories and warehouses.
Along with the partnership with the U.S.-based AI chipmaker, Alibaba said it will launch data centers in Brazil, France and the Netherlands and add more data centers in Mexico, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia and Dubai in the coming year.
Alibaba’s regional expansion plans mark a significant move into Western markets for the Chinese tech giant, which has long dominated the Asian cloud market.
Alibaba is also launching an AI Catalyst Program aimed at helping AI startups grow and scale.
Alibaba's partnership with Nvidia comes a month after China's Cyberspace Administration asked AI vendors, including Alibaba, not to buy Nvidia GPUs.
However, since this partnership is more about physical AI than GPU sales, this is still a win for Nvidia, said David Nicholson, an analyst at Futurum Group.
"It's a different kind of win," Nicholson said. "It provides a level of stickiness that Nvidia would surely love to have despite all of the quarreling between nation-states."
The alliance is also a way for Alibaba to lock in its relationship with Nvidia, regardless of the recent struggles between the Chinese and U.S. governments.
"The benefit for Nvidia is having more cloud providers and service providers on its stack," said Steven Dickens, CEO and analyst at HyperFrame Research. He added that it helps Nvidia maintain its position in the AI race as one of the most innovative players.
"It almost begs the question of why wouldn't you want to partner with Nvidia in this race," Dickens said.
Moreover, Alibaba is showing that it's just like any business in the world, Nicholson said.
"It appears as though Alibaba is calculating that the cost associated with aligning themselves in a complete software stack will reduce their time to market and represent a better investment than if they were to try to reinvent these things themselves," he said.
Nicholson added that the partnership between Nvidia and Alibaba is in stark contrast to the route AI startup DeepSeek took at the beginning of the year. While DeepSeek used Nvidia's chips and decided against using Nvidia software, Alibaba is taking the opposite approach and using Nvidia's software even though it can't get its chips.
"It's yet to be seen if Alibaba's decision to align with Nvidia will be the best decision for the Chinese cloud provider long-term. It is also a testament to the ways Nvidia continues to diversify across the AI market.
"They are moving," Nicholson said. "They've got their armies assembled in the form of nearly unlimited cash, leveraging it to entrench themselves in these places."
