Choosing Your First Generative AI Use Cases
To get started with generative AI, first focus on areas that can improve human experiences with information.
The release includes collaborative tools, a new Copilot character and a new AI browser.
Microsoft is seeking to make AI technology more personal and human with its fall release of Copilot.
With Thursday's release, the tech giant introduced various collaborative tools, including Groups, Imagine, a new Copilot character called Mico, new industry-specific Copilot Groups, such as Copilot for health, and a new browser.
Personalized AI
The human-centered AI platform is an example of a shift toward personalization in the generative AI and agentic AI market.
"It's very thoughtful. It's about how the human is going to rely on, use, be assisted by, and really make this a true copilot," said Liz Miller, an analyst at Constellation Research. "It starts with the human use case in the center. It gives you a far more warm and fuzzy character to interact with. You're not interacting with robotic things."
Miller noted that tech vendors have pitched many agentic AI tools, including Copilot, as being able to do anything and change the way people work.
However, with human-centered AI, the concept is that if enterprises and users can't articulate how they work or play well enough to create their own agents, then vendors will help them, Miller said.
While this approach appears to be a natural progression for Microsoft, Adobe has previously adopted a similar approach with AI tools that automate processes.
Similarly, Microsoft's human-centered AI is meant to promote AI as an assistant for users' personal and professional lives, Miller said.
The new Copilot tools
The warm, fuzzy character is Mico, a character that is expressive, customizable and warm, Microsoft said. It is an optional character that listens, reacts and changes color based on interactions, Microsoft said.
Groups is another new tool that emphasizes social AI. It lets Copilot users collaborate, plan and study together in real time. Up to 32 people can participate in Groups, with Copilot summarizing threads, proposing options, tallying votes and splitting tasks.
Imagine is a collaborative space where users can explore and remix generative AI ideas.
Copilot's new Memory and Personalization feature helps keep track of users' thoughts and to-do lists. Users can ask Copilot to remember key information for the future.
Microsoft is also linking services such as OneDrive, Outlook, Gmail and Google Drive with connectors.
With Proactive Actions preview in Deep Research, Copilot can surface timely insights and suggest the next action based on users' activity or research threads. Microsoft introduced Deep Research in August as a personal research assistant.
Microsoft is also making Copilot Mode in Edge a new AI browser.
Users can interact with Microsoft Edge, and the browser can perform multiple-step actions. Users can chat with Copilot in Edge and turn the feature on or off as needed.
Beyond collaborative tools, Microsoft offers Copilot for specific applications, such as Copilot for Health, which helps users find healthcare providers and matches them based on location, language and other preferences.
Winning market share
"Strategically, this release could signal a new attempt for Microsoft to win over the hearts and minds of end users by offering them a platform that enhances their business and personal lives," said Torsten Volk, an analyst at Omdia, a division of Informa TechTarget.
Microsoft is positioning Copilot as a personal helper integrated within Windows OS and all core Office tools. This integration could be a key to Windows regaining market share from longtime rival Apple's macOS, Volk said.
"At the end of the day, companies are not buying Windows, Microsoft Office or Copilot; they are buying into an ecosystem that makes them more productive to get home to their families a bit earlier in the evening," Volk said. "If Microsoft can actually deliver a complete integrated experience, macOS users will take note and might want to give Windows another shot."
Google users might also notice how Microsoft is changing its collaborative platform, making Teams, SharePoint, and the rest of the Microsoft Office suite more collaborative with Copilot.
"This would certainly be another area where Microsoft could claw back market share from Apple and also from Google, especially as Apple Intelligence does not offer significant enterprise capabilities, making this exactly the right time for Microsoft to attack," Volk said.
Some challenges
One challenge with human-centered AI is that both Microsoft and its customers will have to continue to feed the system, Miller said.
"AI is as effective as the people, the tools, the data, the technology that feeds its ongoing learning and ongoing progression," she said.
"When you are an enterprise buyer, and if you are looking at this for your business, you have to weigh the value that a personally assisted AI technology is going to be ... across your entire business, not just for one human, Miller said. "It's really going to be about how they continue to focus on, yes, the human, but also the network effect that human then creates."
