New framework introduces tamper-proof digital credentials to validate AI agents and reduce instances of fraud
Payment tech company Worldpay has announced a partnership with digital identity platform Trulioo to launch new safeguards for AI-powered commerce.
The launch responds to a rising use of AI agents for online shopping and payment tasks, making customers and businesses alike increasingly vulnerable to fraud or cyberattacks.
To address this threat, the partners said the new system is designed to ensure these transactions remain secure and transparent, and that they meet “evolving regulatory requirements.”
“We’re embedding trust directly into the foundation of agentic commerce by solving the core problem merchants face: distinguishing between a trusted AI agent from a bad actor,” Worldpay Chief Product Officer Cindy Turner told AI Business.
At the heart of the collaboration is a framework called Know Your Agent (KYA), powered by Trulioo’s Digital Agent Passport.
This “tamper-proof” digital credential allows merchants to verify whether an AI agent is legitimate and acting with user consent.
The framework also offers structured guidelines to verify an agent’s developer, as well as consumer intent, to provide a consistent method of verification throughout a transaction.
Rather than blocking AI agents by default, the system introduces smart access controls: verified agents are allowed access, unknown agents face obstacles, and malicious bots are stopped.
“The primary risk of an AI agent is fraud,” Turner said. “Consumers want to ensure an AI agent isn’t 'going rogue' and making unauthorized purchases. At the same time, merchants face the new challenge of proving a transaction is authorized when the buyer is a machine, not a person.”
“Our partnership with Trulioo tackles these risks head on by verifying the agent's identity and authority before a transaction is even processed.”
The partners say the development will help merchants and platforms cut down on fraud, allow smarter agent detection, and enable responsible AI scale-up in the e-commerce space.
“Agentic commerce has significant potential, but it can only scale with trust built in from the start,” said Trulioo CEO Vicky Bindra. “With Worldpay, we’re laying the foundation for a more secure and accountable digital ecosystem, one where AI agents can operate transparently, and consumers stay in control.”
