AI Connectivity Comes to Oil Rig in New Five-Year Contract
Connectivity company Tampnet has won a five-year contract with Norwegian offshore drilling contractor Island Drilling AS, supplying a next-gen communications stack for the Island Innovator, a harsh-environment semi-submersible rig.
The network will combine satellite, LTE and fiber connections to ensure “seamless connectivity wherever the rig operates,” the companies said.
Specifically, Tampnet’s North Sea LTE network and T-FAST microwave/fibre backbone will be integrated with low-earth orbit satellites from Starlink and One Web.
This will then be combined with an AI-driven orchestration layer to automatically re-route traffic across the optimal path, powering a fully managed private 4G/5G network.
The deal comes as digitization becomes an increasingly common (and expected) part of offshore operations, with the network intended to power tools including sensors, drones and robotics. These tools will in turn support smart capabilities such as remote inspections, predictive maintenance and real-time crew support.
“A well-connected rig is no longer a nice-to-have; it’s the backbone for remote operations and data-driven decision-making,” said Trygve Hagevik, Tampnet’s CCO. “By blending LEO, LTE and LOS/fibre with real-time AI traffic steering and Private Network, we’re giving Island Drilling the performance and resilience they need – plus the freedom to scale advanced use cases such as predictive maintenance, digital twins and autonomous inspections.”
Roger Simmens, CEO of Island Drilling AS, added: “Tampnet's multi-layer network and private 5G capability will let our crews work smarter and safer while enabling our rig for the digital future.”
According to the partners, the new network deployment will be completed before the Island Innovator begins its next North Sea campaign at the end of this year.
